Really Big Candy Canes

Thursday, November 5, 2009 by Cherie Lowe
So yesterday we chatted a bit about some earlier Christmas shopping.  Today, I want to let you in on one of the best free things to do in Indianapolis to celebrate the Holiday season - visit "Christmas at Lilly House" at the Indianapolis Museum of Art.  I'm a little embarrassed to say that I've never been before, though.  BUT luckily, my daughter, the Eldest Princess went last year with a friend who's a Ph D student.  Seriously, the kid is 7 and she has one friend who's a City Councilman in Greenwood and one who's a Ph D student at IU.  She's one amazing little person with good taste.  Most kids' friends are still picking their noses in public at this point.  So anyway, I did a little interview to ask her about it.

ME: "Eldest Princess" do you remember going to the Christmas at Lilly House last year?

EP: Yeah.  They had really big candy canes.

ME: What else do you remember?

EP: There was a fireplace and a big Christmas tree and ornaments and a person sitting at a desk.

ME: A desk.  Hmmm.  Did they play Christmas music?

EP: Yes.

ME: Did it make you feel like it was Christmas even though Christmas was already over?

EP:  Kind of.  But it wasn't snowing.  And did I say they had really big candy canes?

ME:  Did you eat one?

EP: *said with slight annoyance and maybe a little disgust* Mooooommm, they weren't those kind of candy canes.

So there you have it.  Minus the snowing, you will feel like it's Christmas inside of the Lilly House even if it's not December 25th (and they had really big candy canes last year).  Beginning November 14th and running through January 3rd of 2010, you can visit this magical place and find decorative styles of the 1930s and 1940s filled with Holiday cheer!  Get ideas for your own decor as the American Country Historic Home also has "new fashions" decking the halls.

I've mentioned before that the IMA is in the opinion of most one of the best free Indianapolis attractions, consistently offering beautiful art, interesting conversation and a serene setting.  So even if you're not in the mood for really big candy canes or it's not the holiday season, you can still find something to enjoy.  Perhaps I'll get the chance to take it in myself this holiday season.  Now, if I just had friends as cool as my daughter's.
