Baltimore versus Browns?

Monday, January 11, 2010 by Bill Benner

We now know who the Indianapolis Colts' AFC Divisional playoff victim, er, foe, will be Saturday night at Lucas Oil Stadium.

It will be the Baltimore Browns ... I mean Ravens.

Funny how it all plays out.

Although it's been nearly 26 years since then-Colts owner Bob Irsay re-located his NFL franchise to Indy, bitterness still abounds among a substantial number of Baltimore folks about what they consider the "theft" of their team.

Never mind that in 1996, Baltimore stole the Browns from Cleveland. Only difference was, they didn't keep the nickname and dubbed them the Ravens.

When the Indy Colts play in Baltimore, stadium officials refuse to refer to them as the Colts. Instead, the scoreboards refer generically to Indianapolis.

After all these years, seems kind of silly, doesn't it? Let it go, already.

What really burns their britches in Baltimore, though, is the Colts' seven-game winning streak over the Ravens. That includes a playoff triumph during the Colts' Super Bowl-winning year and, most recently, a 17-15 regular-season victory this past November.

Anyway, none of that history stuff will matter come 8:15 Saturday night at Lucas Oil, where the house is sure to be rockin'.

The Ravens, as they showed in demolishing the New England Beli-cheats, can be one nasty football team.

Of course, we'll place our faith in the well-rested, healthy Colts of Peyton Manning and Co.

I'm sure it will be a close game.

Might even come down to a last-second field goal from Indy's Matt Stover.

That would be Matt Stover, the former Raven who still lives in Baltimore when he's not kicking for the Colts.

Funny how that might play out. Unless you live in Baltimore and still can't get over the Indianapolis Colts.

Comments for Baltimore versus Browns?

Tuesday, January 12, 2010 by Beth Armiger:
The fact that there is a 7 game streak does not burn us, we very obviously blasted the streak of losing at Gillette Stadium yesterday. What burns Baltimoreans is that the Irsay family refuses to separate the stats of the real Baltimore Colts from the so called wannabe Colts. Peyton Manning is NO Johnny Unitas. Get over yourself! From your picture you look older than the hills so I cannot believe that you cannot appreciate the legacy that is the Baltimore Colts - if not, you're no sports expert! Bob Irsay was a rude, slovenly, alcoholic, liar that embarrassed himself regulary on Baltimore television. Did you not see the interview at the Baltimore Airport when he was totally inebriated "swearing"(literally) he was not in negotiations with any city to move the Baltimore Colts.(a bold faced lie) What's worsse is that"Junior" Irsay concedes his father's alcoholism but does nothing to dispell his father's true ignorant, greedy, dispassionate personality. "Junior" Irsay's mother was so embarrassed by her husband's reprehensible move of the team that she secretly helped to deceive her husband of the move of the instruments, uniforms, etc. of the Baltimore Marching Band to help preserve in some small measure the dignity of our city who will forever be betrayed by the Irsay family. What's worse is that "Junior" Irsay will not approach the NFL Hall of Fame to separate the stats from the Baltimore Colts and Indy. And do you know why?? The real truth is that "junior" grew up LOVING THE BALTIMORE COLTS! Unfortunately, he did not grow up with any sense of loyalty or honestly. He's surly beyond measure! He learned that from his greedy, alcoholic father. My father knew Johnny Unitas and other true Colts. In fact, he built Johnny Unitas's restaurant here in Baltimrore "The Golden Arm", wow, don't remember Peyton Manning ever being called that! No wonder - he isn't! Don't talk about what you don't know - you clearly state that you've been in Indy your whole live - you can't possibly understand the fans of the team that played "THE GREATEST GEAME EVER PLAYED". That ain't about Peyton Manning, hon! How would you like it if we pulled up the old Mayflower truck to Indianapolis and sent your team to Podunk, Mississippi; or Podunk, Kansas; or Podunk, North Dakatoa; or Podunk, New Jersey? I am not disparaging these states at all, I wholeheartedly support any effort they may want in getting an NFL team, but, you must realize to us you are Podunk, Indiana. You had no right to our team, our name, our stats, our players legacy. How lame! And for the record, we did not steal the Browns with lies and complete deception. We did not hurt them by keepeing their name. WE DID NOT STEAL THEIR STATISTICS! And, further more, they got another team right away - that was not the case of Baltimore! Educate yourself before you seek fit to comment. Please submit this to The Baltimore Sun along with your analysis!

Beth: Sounds like you haven't gotten over it. I'd suggest therapy. Or, if you come to Indy this week for the big game, stop by the Lilly HQ. They make Prozac. By the way, I am older than the hills, but not all of them. And I agree with you on the stats issue. Peace (at least until 8:15 Saturday night).

Thanks you for your elementary and hardly ADULT comment to my response to your unfactual piece of fiction. What all of you don't get in Indianapolis is that there is no Baltimorean dead or alive that doesn't agree with me. I challenge you to come to Baltimore, interview anyone on the street about the stealing of the Colts in the middle of the night in a snowstorm and see how they react! I assure you Baltimoreans are POLORIZED on this issue - alcoholic Bob Irsay betrayed Baltimore, he who cared less about - Baltimore and their love of the Colts because he was a greedy, deceitful, ugly human being. Why don't you address THAT? Why don't you write about him??? Why don't you write about who Bob Irsay really was and what a joke his son is??? Are you really proud to have him as the owner of your NFL franchise?? What has he done for you lately??? And by the way, prozac is an anti-depressant - that was an ignorant, uncalled for comment. I'm not depressed, I'm ecstatic to be a Ravens fan, but to impune the legacy of the Baltimore Colts is to impune the memory of my parents and other family members who loved the Baltimore Colts. You should be ashamed of yourself! Should I suggest that you be on ABILIFY ( google it!) for your delusions? I am above that - I recognize with true maturity that just because you have misguided thoughts doesn't mean you have a mental disorder. It really wasn't funn , at all,and does a diservise to those who really suffer from mental disorders. How ignorant can you be? Truth is truth, come to Baltimore and find out for yourself? Find out who the Baltimore Colts were to this city, find out how the Irsays really betrayed this city, Do you know who's statue is in front of the Ravens M&T Bank Stadium??? It's Johny Unitas, hon, not Peyton Manning! I am submitting your original "piece of journalism" along with my comment and you subsequent personal rude comment alluding to my mental instability to a Baltimore sports radio station - perhaps you may know some of the commentators!! I'll let them comment as to who has been the most dignified in their comments. A true Baltimore Colts/Ravens Fan

I second the Prozac comment, because Beth certainly isn't over this. "Beth, move on with your life, please do your best not to make your head explode...especially on Saturday night, when Indy's streak over Baltimore moves to 8. Sorry for your loss and your sub-par team in your far less than sub-par city.
Wednesday, January 13, 2010 by BigBri:
Beth, I appreciate the fact that you love the colts. However, you and the city of Baltimore gave up your right to complain about the loss of your COlts when you accepted the Browns from Ceveland. Period. End of story. And, for the record, the city of CLEVELAND petitioned the NFL in order to keep the Browns name and statistics. The folks in Baltimore had nothing to do with it...
Thursday, January 14, 2010 by Beth:
You don't have a clue about Baltimoreans and how they feel about the Irsays. Bob Irsay was a surly, inarticulate, belligerant drunk - there's plenty of video to support that. Do your homework before you speak. The Modell's willingly left the name and the stats of the Browns. Do your homework before you speak. I would really like to hear from anyone in Indy about their wonderful insights about the Irsay family! No funny anecdotes to relate??? Bob Irsay was an alcoholic, greedy, surly, clearly unhappy man who lied to the mayor of Baltimore(all on video) who cared nothing about Baltimore who had supported the Colts for decades - remember "The Greatest Game Ever Played"? Baltimore did not ask for their team to be moved we did everything to prevent it - if you're not significantly over 26 you have no need to comment due to the fact that you're not old enough to remember let alone have intelligent thought about this! My Dad knew Jonny Unitas, Tom Maddy, Lenny Moore and other REAL Colts. Wouldn't you like to be in his shoes?? I assure you, you don't know more than I do about the Baltimore Colts and their legacy. Again, if you are so enamored of your team, why not change their name, perhaps, the Indianapols Irsays - your moscot could be a big fat head of Bob Irsay - that's attractive - too bad Jimmy Irsay wouldn't let that happen - He needs to be GOD of the true Baltimore Colts -Because He grew up LOVING THEM IN BALTMORE - talk about a two-faced jerk? I don't need prozac people, we as Baltimoreans need an apology from Jimmy Irsay for his ridiculous father. Because I disagree with you does not make me mentally ill! Are you all 5 years old?? Grow up, be men, try to talk to a woman intelligently and try not to resort to stupid rants about mental illness. It's ONLY Football!
Thursday, January 14, 2010 by Bill:
Beth: You are absolutely right. It's just football. We need to put all these bitter words behind us. I apologize for my remarks and I apologize on behalf of all the city of Indianapolis. Good luck to the Browns Saturday night.
Thursday, January 14, 2010 by Rob:
Sorry, Beth. . .you're just a dope. Hope that's gender-neutral enough for you. By the way, when are you starting the "Art Modell for Sainthood" campaign? The Indianapolis Colts will wish you well from the AFC Chamionship Game.
Thursday, January 14, 2010 by Ann:
I agree - it's just football. Please don't put Indianapolis in your line of fire because of your anger with the Irsay's. We aren't a podunk city - quite the contrary. Peyton Manning would be the first to say he is no Johnny Unitas - that's the kind of guy he is. Indianapolis loves Peyton and the Colts, so please don't fault us for being sports fans - most of the people in the stands (from Indianapolis) probably don't even know about what happened 20 years ago. We just love football...and basketball....and baseball...and auto racing.... Unless this issue is a pre-requisite for getting into heaven - I say lets call a truce, support our respective teams and enjoy the GAME of football again.

Beth - Are you convinced that we, the citizens of Indianapolis, are all spawns of Bob Irsay? Nobody is arguing the fact that he was a drunk or a jerk. Yes, perhaps he pulled one over on the people of Baltimore. Deal with it. Jimmy has done a fantastic job making the Colts the most prolific team of the last decade. If you're bitter that his genius is not available to the Ravens I understand, but you can't argue with the man's record. While you cling to the past please accept that we're busy building toward the future. We are not giving you back you name. It's a done deal. We are the Colts and you are the Ravens and, no, we will not apologize for this fact. If you have issues with Bob go visit his grave site and let it out because we don't want to hear your ranting. We didn't move the team, we simply cheer for them and I would hope that you don't fault us for that. Go Indianapolis Colts!

Indianapolis is a nice city. I am disappointed that a member of the convention and visitors bureau (an organization that encourages tourism from all areas including from Maryland) would put such disparaging remarks about a visiting team on this official blog. I look forward to visiting the city for the game. Also Bill, The Browns have their records, colors and all back in their original location of Cleveland. I also apologize that the Ravens didn't put the Colts name on the Video board in the game back in November. It was an equally classless move by the Ravens and MD stadium authority.

Ok Bill, if you don't mind I think I'll take a stab at this one. Tom- I don't think anything that was stated is trying to discourage visitors from coming to Indy. We love having people come to our town! Not once have we said we'd hate Ravens fans to come. In fact, our media team has been assisting Baltimore publications publish different things for Baltimoreans to do while they're here. Now, if this is a matter of us standing up for our team, I can't help you there. We love our Colts. We love our city. And when someone rips us a new one on how much of a "podunk" town we are or how horrible of sports leadership we have here... It's a no brainer- we are going to defend our not only our city, but our people as well. And as far as it coming from the mouths of CVB employees... I think it's something to proud of. We're a passionate group of people that truly believe our city is the best. These things SHOULD be coming from us, because if we don't show how confident and proud we are of this place, who will?

I have noticed your staff putting information out there to encourage Baltimoreans to come out there and applaud you for it. Indy isn't a podunk town. I wish I could go see the speedway and the NCAA Hall of Champions. I hope to come back for Gencon this August to see them. If I work for the Visitors bureau of Baltimore, I would be defending my town also. Indy is one of the best sports and most diverse sports cities out there. It is why you get Super Bowls and Final Fours to your city.

I am an Indianapolis native and lived there for 33 years. I lived there when the Colts came to Indianapolis. I became a fan because I love my hometown city, which is one of the best places in America in my opinion, and because I love sports. I do feel remorse for the people of Baltimore, who clearly they felt their legacy was taken from them. The bitterness written here by Beth was literally in my face the year the Colts won the Super Bowl. I live in Virginia now, just a few hours from Baltimore. A co-worker, a Baltimore native, stood in my office, red in the face, swearing at me and throwing around much of the same rhetoric that Beth wrote. Those who grew up with the Baltimore Colts will never get over it. And some will always be bitter and mean. But I suspect they are bitter and mean about other things as well. I could spew hateful things back at them, but what good does that do? I do not think everyone from Baltimore will forever harbor this grudge. It may just take another generation or two before the hurt really heals. I think with a younger generation that loves the Ravens, it will. Baltimore is a great city, and so is Indianapolis. I hope it's a good game on Saturday, and of course I hope the Indianapolis Colts win.

"Because I disagree with you does not make me mentally ill!" Correct. It's certainly not the differing opinion itself that makes someone sound that mentally ill. It's the frothy spittle you can almost feel coming through the computer screen when reading those, um, entertaining expressions of that opinion. And that's likely not the craziest reader Bill's ever had to deal with. You're a brave man, Bill!

Indy had horrible fans untill peyton came in, your games were blacked out and the team almost left the most boring place in the world. At least use a name that isnt stolen. Try the Racecars or something that has meaning to your city....
